{"title":"Auchentoshan","description":"\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAuchentoshan (pronounced Ock-un-TOSH-un, Gaelic for \"corner of the field\") was established in 1823 on the western outskirts of Glasgow by John Bulloch, a corn merchant who went bust within five years — his son went bankrupt the year after that. When the distillery sold in 1834, one condition was that Bulloch could live rent-free on the grounds for the rest of his life, a deal he honored by reaching 87. It's one of the last surviving Lowland distilleries, and it holds to a Lowland tradition almost everyone else abandoned: triple distillation. Where nearly all Scotch is distilled twice, Auchentoshan runs its spirit through three copper stills, coming off at an unusually high 81% ABV — the same technique Irish whiskey is known for, and the reason the house style is so light, clean, and delicate, with citrus, green fruit, and almost no rough edges. The distillery pioneered single malt bottling in 1969, when nearly all Lowland malt still vanished into blends, and it passed to Morrison Bowmore in 1984 and Suntory in 1994. Because the spirit is so soft, cask work carries the flavor: American Oak matures solely in ex-bourbon for vanilla and coconut; Three Wood moves from bourbon through Oloroso to Pedro Ximénez sherry, took Best Lowland Single Malt at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards; the 12 Year earned 95 points at the IWSC; and the range climbs through 18 and 21 Year, Dark Oak, and the cask-strength Valinch.
