François Voyer Cognac

François Voyer is a family-owned house at Le Maine Verret in Verrières, in the heart of Grande Champagne, Cognac's premier cru. The Voyer family have been winegrowers since 1795 and began distilling their own cognac in 1870; the brand took its modern name when François Chauchet began bottling under his mother's maiden name, Voyer. In 2017 longtime cellar master Pierre Vaudon took ownership, continuing a lineage built on single-cru Grande Champagne production.

The estate farms 28 hectares planted entirely to Ugni Blanc on the chalky Campanian soils that give Grande Champagne its finesse and longevity. Wines are distilled on the lees for aromatic depth, then aged an unusually long three years in new, medium-toasted Limousin oak before moving to older casks. The range runs from VS and Terres de Grande Champagne through VSOP, Napoléon, XO, XO Gold, Extra and Hors d'Âge, plus very old Ancestrale bottlings and occasional single-cask lots.

The style is fruit-forward and floral in youth, developing quince, candied citrus, dried fruit and rancio with age. Tastings.com rated the VS 87, the VSOP 91 and the XO Gold 95 points.
