Founded in 2005 by King Car Group and built with guidance from the late legendary whisky consultant Dr. Jim Swan — the man behind Kilchoman, Penderyn, and Amrut — Kavalan became Taiwan's first privately owned whisky producer and has since earned global acclaim that most distilleries never achieve in a lifetime. Taiwan's hot and humid subtropical climate accelerates the interaction between spirit and cask, allowing Kavalan to extract flavor from the wood more rapidly than cooler climates — meaning even younger expressions carry genuine complexity. Master Blender Ian Chang matured Distillery Select in select malt neutral casks to showcase the fruitiness and subtropical characteristics of Taiwan's climate without too much wood influence, producing a whisky designed for both cocktails and neat sipping. The nose delivers orange zest, caramel, honeysuckle, spice, and dried mango, while the palate brings honeysuckle, cigar box, orange, manuka honey, charred wood, black pepper, and candied tangerine. 90 points from Tastings.com. Launched as a permanent fixture in the Kavalan range, the Sherry Oak takes the same Oloroso sherry casks used to mature Kavalan's legendary Solist Sherry expressions and bottles the vatted result at 46% ABV, giving drinkers access to that extraordinary sherry character without paying single cask prices. Taiwan's hot and humid subtropical climate accelerates the interaction between spirit and cask dramatically, and Kavalan's whiskies develop complexity in years that would take Scottish distilleries decades to replicate, while the sherry casks amplify that tropical richness into something extraordinary.
