Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky revived the name in 2018 for Old Charter Oak, a series built to show what different oak species do to bourbon; earlier editions used Mongolian, Canadian and Chinkapin oak. The law requires bourbon to age in new charred oak containers but never specifies American white oak, and Buffalo Trace has been experimenting with French oak since 1995. This French Oak expression uses Buffalo Trace's Mash #1, the same recipe behind Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare, aged in new barrels coopered from French oak and bottled at 92 proof. Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley calls it power packed with sweetness from vanilla, caramel and wood sugars, balanced by French oak's tannins. Every Old Charter Oak release is produced in limited supply, and the French Oak bottlings are among the most sought after in the series.

Buy Old Charter French Oak Bourbon Whiskey online with fast shipping right to your door.

Old Charter Oak Finest Oak is the newest release in Buffalo Trace Distillery's Old Charter Oak series, the experimental line that ages the distillery's Kentucky straight bourbon in barrels built from different oak sources to show how much the tree shapes the whiskey. Earlier chapters used French, Mongolian, Canadian and Chinkapin oak; Finest Oak takes the opposite approach and goes back to American white oak, but only the best of it. The barrels were made by Canton Cooperage from hand-selected trees chosen for purity, tight grain and ideal seasoning, with the staves seasoned naturally in Kentucky's open air before coopering, and the bourbon was distilled from Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #1, aged and bottled at the Frankfort distillery at 95 proof, 47.5% ABV, with no age statement. Buffalo Trace's own notes call out caramel and berries on the nose, vanilla and maple syrup on the palate, and a finish of oak, chocolate and pepper; retailer tasting notes add toasted oak, caramel cream, dried cherry, toffee, brown sugar and dark honey over a long, warm, slightly dry finish. It ships in the tall, flat Old Charter Oak decanter with the laser-engraved wooden oak-tree medallion on the front, a bottle that stands out on any shelf.
