Cooper's Reed is its North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, drawing organically farmed fruit from Heitz-farmed Napa sites in Rutherford, Howell Mountain, St. Helena and Oak Knoll, with a smaller share from Sonoma Mountain, roughly two-thirds Napa and one-third Sonoma. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out with about 5% Petite Sirah and 1% Merlot. Grapes are picked at night, fermented cool for 7 to 10 days, then aged around nine months in large, older oak casks so the fruit, not the barrel, leads. At 13.0% alcohol it is medium-bodied and streamlined. Wine Enthusiast scored a recent vintage 94 points, citing blackberry, boysenberry, nutmeg, Earl Grey tea, cedar and dried flowers over bramble blueberry, dark plum, bittersweet chocolate and candied orange peel with supple tannins and a silky finish.
