Mount Veeder, the rugged Mayacamas appellation above Carneros, is where Craig made his name: steep slopes between 1,000 and 2,000 feet, thin sedimentary and shale soils, cool marine air and some of the lowest yields in Napa, giving Cabernet of uncommon density and tension. The Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from hillside vineyards on the mountain, blended with small portions of other Bordeaux varieties, aged about 20 months in French oak, roughly half new, and bottled around 14.5% ABV. Expect black currant, blackberry and blueberry with graphite, cedar, dried sage and espresso, a firm, mountain-grown tannin frame and a long, mineral finish that rewards decanting now or cellaring for 15 years.
