Santa Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost part of the Santa Ynez Valley, with crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich soils. It is aged for 16 months in 27 percent new barrels and is bottled at 13.5% alcohol. The winemaker highlights rose petal, white pepper and lavender with a pure, suave texture, and Wine Spectator, which scored it 92 points, described raspberry and blood orange coulis, red tea and a slatelike mineral edge, with a finish framed by a lightly singed mesquite hint. Freshness and mineral tension stand out, and the balance suggests it will age gracefully for years. It is a natural for richer fish dishes such as salmon or swordfish, roast chicken and even game.
