His son Doug Shafer took over as president, and winemaker Elias Fernandez, with the estate since 1984, has crafted every vintage of Hillside Select since the inaugural 1983; the family sold to Korea's Shinsegae Property in 2022 with Doug and Elias remaining at the helm. Hillside Select is one of Napa's defining Cabernets: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best hillside blocks on the estate's volcanic, well-drained slopes, aged about 32 months in 100% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered at roughly 15.5% ABV in 750ml, released in a wooden box. The wine is famously dense and seamless, with layers of blackberry, cassis, black cherry and plum over graphite, espresso, licorice, cocoa and toasty spice, with ripe, velvety tannins and a finish that goes on for minutes. Critics have scored vintages between 95 and 100 points for decades; it rewards 20 or more years of cellaring. Serve with prime rib, lamb rack or dry-aged ribeye.
