Thin sedimentary clay and shale soils limit yields and build the dense tannin and dark fruit that define Mount Veeder. Director of winemaking Dave Guffy blends 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with 9% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot and ages the wine 22 months in 80% new French oak. Bottled at 14.4% alcohol, it shows dark black fruit and bramble aromas with Cabernet at the core, then cassis and boysenberry on the palate, where the Malbec softens the mountain tannins and toasted oak adds subtle cocoa before a long finish.
