Vineyards is the estate of Gina and Steve Viets, who bought a parcel on the Sonoma County side of Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas range, about 1,800 feet up and a mile from the Napa County line, and planted it mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon in 2007 after learning the land had been a vineyard in the late 1800s. Audace is the top single-vineyard Cabernet from the Ruby Vineyard block, made by Jean Hoefliger, the founding winemaker of Alpha Omega and co-owner of AXR. The wine is typically around 96% Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, fermented in barrel with 21 days on skins, aged 22 months in 80% new French oak and bottled at roughly 14.7% ABV in 750ml, with production of only about 150 cases. It shows blackberry jam, plum, black currant, blueberry, crushed gravel, graphite, dried violet, dark chocolate and allspice with elegant tannins and a mineral, salty finish. Recent vintages have earned 97 points from James Suckling, Decanter and The Wine Independent. Pair it with lamb, venison or dry-aged beef.
