Clyde May's motto is that it's better to break a law than cut corners — the words of an Alabama moonshiner who ran stills in the Conecuh Ridge pines from 1946 and did federal time for it. Clyde invented Alabama Style whiskey by dropping oven-baked apples into a year-old barrel for his best customers; his son Kenny went legal in 2001, and the brand — Alabama's official state spirit — is now run by Conecuh Ridge Distillery, with Clyde's grandson L.C. May as ambassador and a distillery built in Troy, Alabama. The Straight Bourbon is the unadulterated one: no apples, sourced from Indiana, aged four to five years in new charred oak, and bottled non-chill filtered at 92 proof. It took Double Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and 95 points at the New York International Spirits Competition; Connosr's reviewer noted a 93 at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. Whiskey Consensus: peach, apricot, and brown sugar, then brown sugar, caramel, cherry, nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove, nicely balanced — and a wish it were 100 proof. Connosr: heavy vanilla, blackberry, black grape, ripe red apple, very fruity. The Whiskey Wash: a pleasantly simple bourbon with little to fault, good on its own or in a cocktail. Honest note: it's sourced Indiana bourbon with an Alabama story, and the reviewers who mind that say so — the medals say the liquid holds up. For an Old Fashioned, a Gold Rush, or neat.
