Codigo 1530 Barrel Strength Anejo Tequila
Barrel Strength Añejo is Código 1530's añejo aged more than two years in French oak Napa Cabernet barrels and bottled undiluted at 88 proof — and one Agave Matchmaker taster says the Cabernet influence is over the top, in the best way. Código is the project of former Crocs CEO Ron Snyder and Federico Vaughan, backed by George Strait, Brett Hull, and Mike Shanahan; it's made at Varo Destilería, NOM 1616, in Amatitán from fully mature blue Weber agave, cooked in stone-clay ovens, fermented with yeast from a local bakery, and double-distilled, additive-free. The Barrel Strength ages a full two years in the Cabernet barrels and is bottled at 44% ABV (88 proof), the strength it left the wood. Sip Tequila: caramelized vanilla, dark chocolate, and toasted oak with dried fruit on the nose, then baking spice, roasted cocoa, butterscotch, and red-fruit sweetness carried by the full weight. Agave Matchmaker's tasters: cooked agave, butterscotch, caramel, and orange peel opening up with air, oak, cinnamon, and cedar, currant and peat from the Cabernet wood, with the Blanco's agave still lurking behind the butterscotch — if you like whiskey flavor, this is the one. Honest note: 88 proof is barrel strength here because tequila enters the barrel lower than whiskey — it's richer and spicier than the 80-proof Añejo, not a cask-strength bruiser, and a couple of tasters found it too oak-forward. Neat, in a snifter, after dinner. The code, at barrel strength.
