Don Julio 70's Día de Muertos edition dresses the original cristalino in a limited 2024 label honoring the Day of the Dead — the same eighteen-month añejo filtered clear, in a bottle made to be kept. In 1942 a young Julio González took a loan to open La Primavera in Atotonilco el Alto, in the Los Altos highlands, and built Mexico's original luxury tequila; Diageo owns it today, still made at NOM 1449, and the house has released a Día de Muertos edition of one of its bottles most years since 2019. Inside is Don Julio 70 Añejo Claro, the first cristalino, created in 2012 for the distillery's seventieth anniversary: 100% mature highland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in brick ovens, double-distilled, aged eighteen months in ex-bourbon American white oak, charcoal-filtered to remove the color while keeping the barrel's vanilla and caramel, and bottled at 40% ABV; check your bottle for the 2024 edition's artwork details. Expect cooked agave, vanilla, honey, and faint toasted oak on the nose, a silky, gently sweet palate of agave, caramel, and light spice, and a clean, smooth finish. Honest note: the liquid is the regular 70 — you're paying for the limited Día de Muertos bottle, which is exactly the point for the collector, the altar, or the gift with meaning.
