The Thomas H. Handy Expresión is highland tequila aged in barrels that held Buffalo Trace's cask-strength Sazerac rye — and Drinkhacker found it the earthier, more agave-laden sibling, with a grassy, rye-laden bite. Expresiones del Corazón is the annual collaboration between Corazón and its owner Sazerac: Corazón's single-estate Los Altos tequila, slow-cooked in stone ovens and distilled at Casa San Matías, NOM 1103, under master distiller Rocío Rodríguez, filled into freshly emptied Buffalo Trace Antique Collection barrels and stored in the first row of the Acatic aging house for airflow, checked every two months, and bottled at 40% ABV in limited quantities. The 2024 Thomas H. Handy Añejo is aged in barrels that held the Antique Collection's uncut, unfiltered straight rye. Drinkhacker, on the 2022 Handy release: considerably stronger on the nose than the Eagle Rare, a grassy, rye-laden bite that pairs with a more prominent agave character, more earthiness and wood, then almond, mint, and cardamom on the palate with a finish of dried dates. Bourbon & Banter notes the barrel influence has grown with each iteration. Honest note: this is the Expresión for the rye drinker — spice and herb rather than butterscotch — and the one enthusiasts who want to still taste agave under the whiskey tend to prefer.
