Gran Orendain is the Orendain family's premium line: three generations in the Tequila Valley, at El Llano, NOM 1110, a short walk from Fortaleza; the family also makes Arette at a sister distillery, and this is the house's own name on its best juice — 100% blue Weber valley agave, slow-cooked, double-distilled, aged in American oak for the añejo term, and bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Agave Matchmaker's tasters: it starts from an aggressive blanco and comes out roasted-agave-forward with a smooth bourbon finish — maple, black pepper, cherry, oak, a woody finish, complex and delicious; another found more agave here than in the reposado. A detailed tasting: light sweet cooked agave, citrus, a hint of Calvados, ripe apple and pear, sweet pineapple, thick body, good sweet-sour balance, medium-long finish. Expect cooked agave, cherry, maple, and oak with a peppery valley edge and a warm, dry finish. Honest note: an añejo that still tastes of agave from a founding family of Tequila town, at a fraction of the decanter brands — the valley añejo for the purist on a budget.
