Long Island Lou's headline on Grand Mayan Ultra Aged was one word in capitals: outstanding — one of his favorite extra añejos at any price, in possibly the most beautiful Talavera bottle available. Grand Mayan is made at Tequila Selecto de Amatitán, NOM 1459, in the valley town of Amatitán — the same distillery behind Calirosa — from 100% blue Weber agave, and every bottle is a Talavera ceramic hand-painted by artisans in Mexico City, so no two are alike. The Ultra Aged is the top of the line: slow-cooked valley agave, double-distilled, aged more than three years in American and French oak and blended with four- and five-year tequila, bottled at 40% ABV in a limited-edition painted ceramic. Long Island Lou: extremely smooth and silky with a definite Cognac presence, chocolate and caramel smoothness that eventually gives a burst of agave — the darkest, richest-looking extra añejo he'd seen, multiple-award-winning, and so easy to drink his non-tequila-drinking wife loved it; he'd have liked more agave on the nose. Expect a deep mahogany pour with a nose of caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, and dried fruit, opening into a dense, silky, sweet palate of cocoa, butterscotch, and oak with a long, warm finish. Honest note: a Cognac drinker's extra añejo in a museum bottle, at a price that undercuts the decanter competition. Neat, in a snifter, and keep the Talavera. The Talavera, ultra aged.
