Herradura Legend Anejo Tequila
Herradura Legend is an añejo aged in deeply grooved, heavily charred new oak barrels — the grooves multiply the wood's surface area, and the result is a smoky, rich tequila unlike anything else the hacienda makes. Félix López registered Hacienda San José del Refugio as a tequila producer in 1870 in Amatitán, beneath the Tequila volcano; the hacienda is still the distillery, NOM 1119, and Brown-Forman has owned it since 2007, keeping the clay hornos, the wild-yeast fermentation, and 25 million agaves in the ground. Legend is 100% estate-grown blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in clay ovens, fermented naturally with wild yeast, double-distilled, aged añejo-length in new American oak barrels with the staves grooved and heavily charred to expose more wood, and bottled at 40% ABV in a tall, dark presentation bottle. The house: a distinct, keenly rich añejo, an achievement of time, flavor depth, and barrel craft. Wooden Cork: uniquely smoky and rich from the grooved, charred barrels. The Spirits Educator tasted it asking whether it's worth $100 — the grooved-barrel technique is the whole conversation. Expect a deep amber pour with a nose of charred oak, smoke, caramel, and dark chocolate over cooked agave, opening into a rich, oak-forward palate of toffee, cocoa, and baking spice with a long, smoky finish. Honest note: the most barrel-driven Herradura by design — a bourbon drinker's tequila, and not the agave-forward pick. Neat, in a snifter, or an Old Fashioned. The horseshoe, charred.
