Mandala Añejo comes in a hand-painted one-liter ceramic — highland agave aged past a year in oak, from the house famous for its beaded Huichol art bottles, and Flaviar says the añejo is what everyone's after. Arturo Lomelí Ibarra founded Mandala in 2016 with Humberto Ibarra and José Joel García Barreto in the Los Altos highlands, with a mission to make a tequila worth savoring and a bottle worth keeping; the house is a multiple international award winner, and its ceramics are painted by local artisans. The Añejo is 100% mature highland blue Weber agave, cooked in traditional brick ovens with meticulous care, double-distilled, aged more than a year in oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in the painted one-liter ceramic. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak with dried fruit, opening into a smooth, rounded, sweet palate of butterscotch, oak, and baking spice with a warm, moderately long finish. Honest note: a decanter brand's sweet, smooth highland añejo — built for the whiskey drinker and the gift, not the agave purist — and the painted liter outlasts the tequila.
