Padre Azul's Day of the Dead Limited Edition is the house añejo in an artist-designed skull bottle — the brand whose signature is a metal calavera making its annual Día de Muertos statement. H.P. Eder, heir to a Tyrolean schnapps family, launched Padre Azul in 2016 with his Mexican father-in-law after falling in love with a woman from Guadalajara, to bring 100% agave tequila to Europe; the name comes from the expression qué padre — how fantastic — and it's made at Tres Mujeres, NOM 1466, in the lowlands of Amatitán; the house has released artist editions for Día de Muertos, including a 2021 bottle by José Parra, and a Swarovski crystal-skull collaboration. Inside is the Añejo: 100% lowland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked, double-distilled, aged a minimum of eighteen months in used bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV in the limited artist-edition skull bottle; check your bottle for the year and artist. Expect a rich, smooth, sweet palate of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon oak with an extra-long finish. Honest note: the liquid is the house añejo — sweet, smooth, and purist-divisive — and the artist skull is the point, for the collector, the altar, and the gift that has to be seen. Neat, on a big cube, on November first. Qué padre, for the dead.
