Rey Sol — the Sun King — is six years in French oak in a crystal sun decanter by Sergio Bustamante, from the house that made the first extra añejo in tequila. Casa San Matías was founded in 1886 and is run today by Carmen Villarreal Treviño, the first woman to own and operate a tequila house; its Ojo de Agua distillery, NOM 1103, sits on a natural spring near Tepatitlán in the Los Altos highlands, and its Gran Reserva of 1993 was the first extra-aged tequila to market — the same distillery makes Corazón. Rey Sol is 100% estate highland blue Weber agave, cooked in stone ovens, double-distilled, aged a minimum of six years in French oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in a hand-etched crystal sun designed by Bustamante, one of Mexico's most celebrated sculptors, with a matching case. Sip Tequila: caramel and vanilla with dried cherry, plum, butterscotch, and dark chocolate over cooked agave, a full, balanced palate of dark plum, honey, butter, and butterscotch with gentle oak and brown spice that never overwhelms the agave, a long, clean finish.
