Réserve Spéciale is Neisson's aged flagship, a blend of rhums built from stock reportedly aged up to ten years in a mix of French and American oak, including used bourbon and whiskey barrels, all distilled and matured on the Thieubert-Carbet estate. It's also one of the more divisive bottles Neisson makes — multiple independent reviewers specifically describe it as polarizing, closer in character to a peated or sherried whisky than a typical aged rum. Expect a complex nose of leather, tobacco, fennel, black pepper, and orange marmalade, with sautéed almonds and a hint of oloroso sherry running underneath. On the palate, tobacco and leather lead, joined by licorice, allspice, and grassy phenolic notes that some tasters compare directly to Scotch whisky, before a finish that leans into saddle leather, dusky bitterness, and lingering char.
