Two James Nain Rouge Absinthe Verde
Nain Rouge is Detroit's most famous and feared mythological creature — and Two James couldn't resist naming their absinthe after the city's original demon. According to legend, Detroit's founder Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac was warned by a fortune teller to appease the Nain Rouge — the "Red Dwarf" or "Demon of the Strait" — but upon encountering the creature, he smacked it with his cane and shouted "Get out of my way, you red imp!" As a consequence, a string of bad luck befell Cadillac — charged with abuse of power, reassigned to Louisiana, briefly imprisoned in France, and eventually losing his entire fortune. Every spring, Detroit still hosts a community parade called the Marche du Nain Rouge in the demon's honor — making this the most culturally embedded absinthe in America. Starting with a traditional 19th century French recipe, Two James distills wormwood, fennel, green anise, and over 100 pounds of botanicals to create unfathomable depth of flavor and complexity, with peppermint, green peppercorn, lemon peel, lemon balm, clove, star anise, and allspice on the palate, and the natural green color coming from peppermint, hyssop, and nettle. Bottled at 60% ABV. Serve traditionally with chilled water and a sugar cube, or rinse a Sazerac glass and let the Green Fairy do her work.
