Bobby's is built on a real family story: Jacobus "Bobby" Alfons emigrated from Indonesia to Schiedam, the Dutch town that's been the historic heart of genever production for centuries, and blended his homeland's spices into the local jenever he found there. His grandson turned that personal recipe into a gin, launched in 2014, distilled at the Herman Jansen distillery — a house famous for generations of genever production. Eight botanicals are each distilled separately in 300 and 600-liter copper stills before being blended: classic Dutch gin botanicals (juniper, fennel seed, coriander, rose hips) meeting Indonesian spices from Bobby's original Pinang Raci recipe (lemongrass, clove, cinnamon, cubeb pepper). Bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV) with Tastings.com scoring it 87 points. This is deliberately not a traditional London Dry — expect a floral, spice-forward nose of rose hip, lemongrass, and cinnamon, moving into bold citrus, clove, fennel, and piney juniper, finishing long and peppery with cubeb and basil. Reviews genuinely split: some call it the most refreshing gin they've ever tasted, while traditional juniper-forward drinkers find it too much. Best served neat or in a G&T with Mediterranean tonic and an orange slice.
