Bobby's Schiedam Jenever

Bobby's built its name on the Schiedam Dry Gin, which was itself based on an old jenever recipe — so this release is a genuine full-circle return to the source. Made at the Herman Jansen distillery, which has been distilling malt wine genever in Schiedam since 1777, this uses the traditional malt wine base that defines jenever (widely considered gin's direct ancestor), flavored with just five botanicals: juniper, lemongrass, cardamom, cubeb pepper, and ginger, with no added sugars or extracts. Bottled at 38% ABV. That malt base gives it a nutty, bready weight closer to a young whisky than a gin, with the Indonesian spices layered over top. Expect maltiness, juniper, candied ginger, and lemongrass on the nose, moving into soft oatmeal, fresh citrus, toasted hazelnut, fiery ginger, and cubeb pepper, finishing medium-length with a warming peppery tingle. Reception is genuinely a bit softer than for the Dry Gin — more than one reviewer noted they preferred the gin, finding this mellower and less punchy — though it works beautifully as a milder aperitif, neat in a traditional tulip glass, over ice, or in a Martinez or jenever sour.
