6 O'clock Brunel Gin

Brunel is named for Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Victorian engineer whose SS Great Britain sits in Bristol's Floating Harbour a few miles from the distillery — and for every bottle sold, £1 goes to the SS Great Britain Trust. It's the export-strength expression of 6 O'clock Gin from Bramley & Gage, the West Country family distillery run by Michael and Felicity Kain since 2007, launched in June 2017 as what the family calls a giant of a gin. The recipe starts from the London Dry's seven botanicals — juniper, coriander, angelica, orris, elderflower, orange peel, and winter savory — then adds extra juniper and six new ones: green cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, cassia bark, cubeb pepper, and lemon, bottled at 50% ABV. Gin Foundry found a dustier, spice-rack nose of cumin, cardamom, and nutmeg with an underlying lemon sweetness and fleeting honeysuckle, opening into an earthy angelica-cardamom sweetness with early citrus and a hint of anise before dry, deep spice takes over, juniper holding it firmly in place throughout, finishing dry, spiced, and enduring — remarkably smooth for the strength, and a rare follow-up that equals or beats the flagship.
