Cutwater Old Grove Gin

Old Grove is San Diego's gin, made about fifteen minutes up the road in Miramar — and its inspiration is the Torrey pine, the rare tree that grows only on the semi-arid shores of San Diego and looks, to a distiller's eye, strangely like the juniper that defines London Dry. Cutwater Spirits began around 2007 as the distilling arm of Ballast Point Brewing; when the brewery sold to Constellation in 2015, the founders kept the spirits, and master brewer Yussef Cherney became master distiller of what's now one of the largest craft distilleries in the country. Old Grove is a San Diego twist on the London Dry style: distilled from corn and vapor-infused with eleven botanicals — freshly cracked juniper berries rather than dried or pre-processed ones, plus rose petals, lemongrass, and coriander among the standouts — bottled at 44% ABV. Gin Boss found juniper, rose, and coriander leading, followed by a black pepper and vanilla finish. Expect bold, earthy juniper on the nose with a floral rose lift and lemongrass brightness, opening into a rich, botanical palate where the fresh-cracked juniper gives real piney depth alongside classic citrus and spice, finishing clean with lingering juniper and pepper. Honest note: Wine Enthusiast's blind panel found the base neutral and the botanicals slow to emerge.
