De Borgen New Style Genever

New Style is De Borgen's 19th-century genever — the lightest, most gin-like of the brand's three expressions, built on the distillation techniques and botanical bills that came into fashion as column stills arrived and Dutch distillers began chasing a cleaner spirit. It's made at Hooghoudt, a fourth-generation family distillery founded in 1888 in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands, whose De Borgen range traces the 400-year history of the Dutch national spirit: Malt Genever for the 16th century, Old Style for the 18th, and this one for the era when genever met the cocktail. The recipe balances a lighter proportion of malt spirit — the pot-distilled grain distillate that gives genever its whiskey-like body — with juniper berry distillate triple-distilled in copper and a fuller cast of botanicals than the Old Style, then finishes with time in Oloroso sherry casks, the house signature.
