Victoria, British Columbia calls itself the City of Gardens — flowers bloom year-round in its mild climate, and baskets of them hang from the lampposts — and Elderflower Rose is Empress 1908's tribute to it. Master Distiller Phil Lecours at Victoria Distillers in Sidney, BC, the house behind the famous indigo Empress 1908, built this second expression from nine all-natural botanicals: red rose petals, elderflower, and lavender leading a bill that also carries juniper, orange peel, and supporting spice, macerated and distilled in copper pot stills. The vibrant red-violet color is entirely natural, drawn from black carrot rather than butterfly pea, so it behaves differently in the glass than the original. Bottled at 42.5% ABV (85 proof). Drinkhacker found lavender showing early with florals, followed by cinnamon, pine, and black pepper, a bit of black licorice mid-palate, and elderflower lingering in a long finish — delicious and very attractive in a G&T, best over a single cube, though it didn't play well with vermouth in a Martini. Thirty-One Whiskey found it very floral at first sniff, with juniper, lavender, and elderflower coming through clearly. Victoria Distillers describes a rich aroma with a surprisingly understated floral palate, complemented by citrus and spice and a hint of sweetness. Honest note: it's a floral gin through and through — not for juniper purists.
