The Ha'penny Bridge has crossed the River Liffey in the heart of Dublin since 1816, when the toll to walk it was half a penny — and this gin is named for it. Ha'penny Dublin Dry is made at the Pearse Lyons Distillery, the boutique distillery Alltech founder Dr. Pearse Lyons built inside the restored St. James's Church in the Liberties, and its thirteen botanicals were chosen for what would have been growing in nearby Phoenix Park in Victorian times, when the bridge was new: blackberry, dandelion flower, lavender, and geranium, alongside juniper, orange and lemon peel, cracked black pepper, anise, angelica, licorice bark, coriander, and cassia. Small-batch pot distilled and bottled at 41% ABV. Master of Malt found lemon pith and sweet juniper jumping from the glass, backed by floral wafts of lavender with black pepper in the background — an excellent Irish gin. The distillery describes floral aromas with a hint of lavender to awaken the senses, then blackberry, lavender, and orange peel leaving a lingering sweetness on a well-rounded, slightly citrusy palate. Expect the juniper up front, the Phoenix Park florals through the middle, a gentle dark-fruit sweetness from the blackberry, and a soft peppery close. Honest note: contemporary and floral-leaning rather than a bone-dry classic. The signature serve is tonic with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint; it also drinks well neat with a drop of water.
