Kula comes from Hawaii Sea Spirits, which operates on an 80-acre organic farm in Kula, upcountry Maui — the same distillery behind Ocean Organic Vodka. They grow their own sugarcane on the surrounding acreage, ferment the fresh juice, and distill it in column stills, then proof it down using deep ocean mineral water drawn from 3,000 feet below sea level. This expression uses the organic Kula rum as its base, infused with natural caramelized coconut sugars and bottled at 35% ABV, pouring a golden caramel color. Expect fresh toasted coconut flake, vanilla, and burnt sugar on the nose, with caramel emerging as it sits, opening into sweet macaroon and coconut cream character with brown sugar and lime zest on the finish. Worth being straight with you: reception among serious rum reviewers is mixed at best — Got Rum's Paul Senft found the mouthfeel thin and the finish disappointing, while others enjoy it as an unpretentious, un-artificial coconut rum at a fair price. This is a mixer first: it shines in Piña Coladas, Painkillers, and frozen tropical drinks, and works well simply over soda and ice.
