Mezan Guyana 2005 Rum
This one comes with a genuinely remarkable piece of rum history built into the bottle: it's distilled on the legendary double wooden pot still that originally belonged to Guyana's Port Mourant Estate, founded in 1732, one of the most celebrated stills in the entire rum world. When Port Mourant closed, the still moved first to Uitvlugt Distillery and eventually to Diamond Distillery, where it still produces today's Demerara-style rum. This particular batch was distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2015, making it a genuine 10-year-old, unsweetened, uncolored, and only lightly filtered, true to Mezan's "Untouched Rum" ethos. Drinkhacker gave it a B+, and reviewers consistently pick up the signature Port Mourant character: aniseed and licorice alongside banana, guava, papaya, oak, tobacco, and a touch of caramel and raisin. There's a genuinely recurring critique worth knowing, though — multiple independent reviewers specifically wished this were bottled at a higher proof than the standard 40% ABV, feeling the spirit's real character gets a bit muted at this strength and would shine more around 46-50%. Still, most find it a pleasant, summery, easy-drinking rum, and a genuinely affordable way to taste Port Mourant character without paying El Dorado prices.
