Convite Joven Espadin Madrecuishe
Espadín-Madrecuishe is the Convite that Tasting Table calls a velvety sip on its own — and the one Mezcal Reviews' drinkers name the best value in the range, a no-brainer when they want something from the region. Convite is Oaxaca's top-selling mezcal, founded in 2013 and Oaxacan-owned, made in the Zapotec mountains of San Baltazar Guelavila by brothers Cosme "Tucho" and Daniel Hernández, the sixth generation of master distillers in their family. This ensamble marries eight-year espadín with wild madrecuishe — the mother cuishe, an Agave karwinskii harvested at around thirteen years — cooked together in an underground pit oven, milled by a horse-drawn tahona, naturally fermented with spring water, and double-distilled in a copper alembic, bottled at 42% ABV. Convite's notes: citric tones, fresh herbs, and a light cocoa aroma. Mezcal Reviews' tasters found fresh, sweet agave juice and a long minty finish. Drinkhacker found something bolder: an intently beefy, barbecue-smoke nose, green and ashy, then heavy smoked meat with roasted marshmallow and overripe orange, finishing on toasty mesquite — batches vary, and both readings are real. Expect cooked-agave sweetness up front, the madrecuishe's herbal, mineral, faintly bitter-green edge through the middle, and a finish that swings between mint and mesquite depending on the lot. For a copita neat, an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, or a smoky Negroni, it's the Convite that shows what a wild agave adds.
