Del Maguey Vida de Puebla Mezcal
Vida de Puebla is Del Maguey's answer to the question every bartender asks: can we get Vida cheaper? Vida — launched in 2010 from San Luis del Río — became the world's go-to cocktail mezcal, and by 2023 demand had outrun what one village could make. Co-founder Steve Olson led the project to build a state-of-the-art palenque in Axocopan, Puebla, and release a sustainably produced, easy-drinking Vida at a competitive price. It's 100% ripe espadín, roasted underground, naturally fermented, and twice-distilled in small copper stills, bottled at 40% ABV; Del Maguey says the volcanic rock in Puebla's soil gives it a distinct minerality. Difford's found pine forest, ripe peach, caramelized agave, and white pepper on the nose, then a piney, earthy, delicately smoky palate where flinty mineral notes emerge with white peach and grapefruit, finishing smoky and mineral with pepper — more earthy and piney than smoky, and at its lower proof a less challenging entry mezcal well suited to cocktails. Honest note: purists will point out it's not from San Luis del Río, and the original Vida remains the reference — but at the price this is one of the best cocktail mezcals on the shelf, and the Pernod Ricard distribution means it's actually available. For a Mezcal Margarita, a Paloma, a Naked & Famous, an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, or a Mezcal Mule, it does the job Vida invented. Puebla, in the green bottle.
