Derrumbes Guerrero Mezcal
Derrumbes Guerrero is mezcal from the tropical mountains of Mexico's Pacific south — a state whose mezcal tradition is among the least commercialized in the country, still largely family-run over wood fire. Derrumbes is a mezcal atlas, one bottle per state, and Guerrero's is made from the agave that defines the region: papalote, Agave cupreata, which grows wild on the humid, forested slopes, can't be cultivated at scale, takes 12 to 15 years to mature, and produces a mezcal markedly different from Oaxacan espadín — fruit-forward, complex, and lighter on smoke. Pit-roasted, crushed, naturally fermented, and distilled by a local maestro mezcalero in the traditional method; check your label for the batch's ABV and details. Expect a nose of ripe tropical fruit, green herbs, and a faint floral sweetness over a gentle smoke, opening into a rounded, fruity palate with an earthy, humid-forest depth and a peppery spice, finishing long and warm. Honest note: Guerrero mezcal is a regional rarity for drinkers curious about agave beyond Oaxaca — and papalote is the same agave Clase Azul chose for its Guerrero decanter, at a fraction of the price here. In a copita, neat, or a Mezcal Paloma with the fruit already built in. Derrumbes' southern chapter, with Gallo a stakeholder since 2024.
