Mezcal PhD calls Ilegal Añejo transcendent, and Tequila Whisperer says it delivers some of the most pleasing aged flavors of any mezcal he's ever tasted. Ilegal started as smuggling: in 2004 John Rexer began bringing unbranded mezcal from Oaxaca for his bar, Café No Sé, in Antigua, Guatemala, went legit in 2006, and named the brand for its origins; it's made at the Mal de Amor palenque in Santiago Matatlán by fourth-generation mezcaleros Armando and Alvaro Hernández, and Bacardí bought it in 2023. Añejo is the house espadín — pit-roasted, fermented in oak vats, double-distilled in small copper stills — aged thirteen months in a blend of American and French oak, bottled at 40% ABV. Mezcal Reviews: maple, clove, and bitter orange aromas, dark chocolate and sweet agave on the palate, rounded, full, rich, much softer than the reposado, and the mezcal to serve friends who claim they don't like mezcal. Rolling Stone: rich and rustic, dark chocolate, orange, sweet agave. Mezcal PhD argues aged mezcals expand the market, and that purists who look past Ilegal for them are mistaken. Honest note: some Mezcal Reviews tasters found the oak dominates the espadín and the price steep — more tequila añejo than mezcal — while others call it their favorite in the range. For a mezcal Old Fashioned, a smoky Manhattan, a cigar, or the whiskey drinker's first mezcal, it's Ilegal, thirteen months in.
