A bourbon ball is Kentucky's signature candy — a pecan-studded bourbon cream center dipped in dark chocolate, invented in Frankfort in the 1930s — and Ballotin turned it into a whiskey. Paul Tuell, a former Brown-Forman brand manager, founded Ballotin in Louisville in 2015 with a single idea: bring the subtle flavors people already love in bourbon — chocolate, caramel, nuts, vanilla — to the front. The name comes from the stylish box a Belgian chocolatier's wife invented in 1915 to present fine chocolates. The base is 100% whiskey, no neutral spirit: a traditional bourbon mash of at least 51% corn with wheat and barley, aged in used oak barrels so the char doesn't fight the flavor, then blended with natural chocolate, caramel, and pecan flavors and bottled at 60 proof. Tuell is careful on the point: it can't legally be called flavored bourbon, but it is 100% whiskey. The Whiskey Reviewer found a nose rife with nutty caramel pecan, a smooth, sweet mouthfeel, and a finish exactly as promised — nutty, caramel, chocolate, with sweetness that lingers just long enough to warrant the next sip — and imagined it over vanilla ice cream or crème brûlée. Honest note: this is a dessert whiskey, sweet by design, and bourbon purists should look elsewhere. For everyone else it's the flagship of the line and the most Kentucky thing in it. Neat as a nightcap, in coffee, or as an after-dinner shot that tastes like the candy.
