Bardstown Bourbon Company Collaborative Series Amrut
This is a first for American whiskey: a blend of rye and bourbon finished in casks that previously held Amrut Indian single malt. Bardstown Bourbon Company's VP of product development Dan Callaway explained the choice — Amrut's malted-barley whisky, distilled and aged in Bangalore's warm, humid climate, is an interesting bridge between Scotch and bourbon, and one of the most respected malts in the world since Jim Murray named its Fusion the third-best whisky on earth in 2010. Released May 2024 in the Collaborative Series, the whiskey takes Bardstown's rye and bourbon and rests them in the ex-Amrut casks, drawing out the Indian malt's tropical-fruit, honeyed, faintly spiced character to layer over Kentucky grain. InsideHook called it an intriguing transcontinental expression. Expect a nose of honey, ripe stone fruit, and malt biscuit over the rye's pepper and the bourbon's caramel, opening into a palate where the malt's soft sweetness meets rye spice, a whisper of tropical fruit, and oak, finishing long and gently spiced with a lingering cereal note. Robb Report notes the series has been pretty consistently excellent, following finishes in Amaro Nonino, Goose Island Bourbon County, Foursquare rum, Maison Ferrand Cognac, and Phifer Pavitt Cabernet. Bourbon Fool notes these bottles are much sought after by collectors looking for a flavor profile they may never see again.
