Armida is Joe Beatrice's mother's formal name, and the whiskey is a memory of her family's farm in the Northeast — orchard fruit, fall air, the timing of ripe pears. Barrell Craft Spirits, the Louisville blender Beatrice founded in 2013, built it as an experiment that took over a year: three Tennessee straight bourbons, each finished separately in a different cask — pear brandy, Jamaican rum, and Sicilian amaro — then married to taste and bottled at cask strength, 112.1 proof on the first release, with proof varying slightly by blend. Released October 2020 in a run of 3,700 bottles, it took Platinum and Best Unique Barrel-Finished Bourbon at the 2022 L.A. Spirits Awards. Wine Enthusiast's blind panel found a kaleidoscope of fruit — orange peel, dried apricot, lychee — drying to coconut and oak, with water releasing eggnog spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and almond. Breaking Bourbon was initially shocked: a combination of flavors they'd never experienced in a whiskey, one of the more interesting creations ever attempted with bourbon, revisited many times and really enjoyed.
