Colección Visionaria is where Brugal's fifth-generation Maestra Ronera, Jassil Villanueva Quintana — the first woman to hold the title in the Dominican Republic — introduced a technique unique to the house: Aromatic Cask Toasting. For this inaugural Edición 01, virgin European oak casks are toasted with Dominican cacao beans, infusing the wood with their nutty, velvety, fruity aromas; the beans are removed, the casks are filled, and the rum matures under the Dominican sun — flavor from aroma alone, with nothing added to the liquid. The inspiration was personal: Villanueva grew up walking among the cacao trees around her family home. The rum is Brugal's Spanish-style spirit — molasses fermented 12 to 40 hours with proprietary yeast, double distilled on column stills — bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV) in a 700ml netted bottle in a blue box. Expect hot chocolate, toasted oak, spice, and citrus on the nose balanced by vanilla, opening into vanilla and caramel giving way to dark chocolate, dried fruit, and toasted nuts, with a smooth mouthfeel and a long, toasted-oak finish.
