PJ Rigney went to Natal, Brazil during Carnival and came home with a gin. The founder of the Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim — the first new distillery in Connacht in over a century, and home to Ireland's best-selling gin — discovered what locals called abacaxi, Portuguese for "thorny fruit," and made Brazilian pineapple the showpiece of the latest Gunpowder offshoot, released in 2024. The base is the full Gunpowder recipe: juniper, angelica, orris, caraway, cardamom, coriander, star anise, and local meadowsweet steeped and distilled in medieval-style copper pot stills, with slowly dried Chinese gunpowder green tea vapor-infused through baskets. Here, Brazilian pineapple, grapefruit, and lime join the tea in the vapor baskets. Bottled at 43% ABV. Drinkhacker found early notes of tea leaves and matcha giving way to the pulpy, high-toned sweetness of the pineapple, citrus shining mid-palate with dried grapefruit and lime zest, and a warm finish of white pepper, pine resin, and cardamom pods — calling it another impressive release, with the pineapple a fun twist on a Last Word or a Martini and enough citrus for a simple G&T. The Ultimate Spirits Challenge noted crystalline gunpowder tea and oriental botanicals with exotic fresh-citrus layers and subtle pineapple. Honest note: the pineapple is a nuance, not a tiki bomb.
