For La Alteña's 85th anniversary, Carlos Camarena and Jim Beam's Fred Noe aged El Tesoro for thirty-six months in barrels that held Booker's 30th Anniversary bourbon — casks that already spent up to sixteen years with whiskey in them. Don Felipe Camarena founded La Alteña, NOM 1139, in Arandas in 1937, and his grandson Carlos runs it today with the same methods: 100% estate-grown highland blue Weber agave slow-roasted in brick hornos, crushed by a two-ton stone tahona, fermented with the fibers in wooden tanks, and distilled to proof; El Tesoro and Booker's share a parent in Suntory, and Camarena and Noe are friends. The 85th Anniversary is the blanco aged a full thirty-six months in the Booker's 30th barrels — a 2018 bourbon that sells for over $1,000 on secondary — and bottled at 42.5% ABV in an engraved case. The house notes: licorice, cooked agave, blackberry, oak, tobacco, and coffee with a long, creamy finish. Sip Outsider: cinnamon, baking spice, chocolate, coffee, maple, caramel, and vanilla with a ripe-plum fruitiness.
