Magisterium was the most anticipated ECS of 2024 — Mark XXVI, and the first Oloroso sherry maturation since Sovereignty, which Memphis Rum Club calls a fan favorite among recent marks. Foursquare is the distillery Fred Minnick dubbed the Pappy of rum: the Seale family's operation in St. Philip, Barbados, where Richard Seale has led the fight for unadulterated rum — no sugar, no color, no additives, no filtration — and every drop is distilled, aged, blended, and bottled on the island. Magisterium — "mastery" — is a Single Blended Rum of pot and column distillate produced in 2008, built from three sixteen-year components: one aged three years in ex-bourbon and thirteen in ex-Oloroso, one nine years in ex-bourbon and seven in ex-Oloroso, and one sixteen years entirely in ex-bourbon, blended and bottled at 58% ABV in limited quantities. That structure lets Seale dial in exactly how much sherry the blend carries: expect a nose of dried fig, raisin, walnut, and dark chocolate with the nutty, saline oxidation of Oloroso over the house's vanilla, coconut, and toasted oak, opening into a dense, layered palate where sherried dried fruit and savory depth meet caramel, baking spice, and the signature buttery texture, the proof carrying it all, finishing very long and dry.
