Germana Caetano's Cachaca
Caetano's is Germana's amburana cachaça — aged in the Brazilian wood that tastes like nothing else in spirits. Germana is one of Brazil's great artisanal cachaça houses, founded in 1912 in Nova União, Minas Gerais, and famous for bottles wrapped in banana leaves; Caetano's is named for the family's founder and made the traditional way: fresh sugarcane juice from the estate, fermented with a natural yeast culture that includes cornmeal, distilled in copper pot stills, and aged in amburana casks, bottled at 40% ABV. Amburana — Brazilian teak, a native hardwood — lends cachaça a distinctive cinnamon, vanilla, tonka-bean, and cola sweetness that European oak never gives, and it's the wood Avaã's Amburana made famous in the US. Rum Ratings' taster found the Germana version much lighter and smoother than Avaã's, sippable neat, on the rocks, or in a Caipirinha where it stays subtle, and a possible gateway to aged Martinique agricole — though the same reviewer later soured on it, calling it industrial cachaça dressed up by the cask, so opinions differ. Expect a golden pour with a nose of cinnamon, vanilla, cola, and cane, opening into a soft, spiced, gently sweet palate with a grassy cane core, finishing warm. For an Amburana Old Fashioned, a spiced Caipirinha, a Batida, or neat as an introduction to Brazil's strangest, loveliest wood. Banana leaf and all.
