Hampden Estate 2022 Great House Rum
Great House 2022 is the vintage where Hampden flipped the formula — and Rum Runner Labs found it scored well neat and really well mixed, making it an ideal special-occasion cocktail rum. Great House is Hampden's annual distillery edition, co-bottled with Velier in the black bottle with the blue label showing the estate's Georgian great house: each year a marriage of a long-aged, low-ester marque with a younger, high-ester one, blended and bottled at the Trelawny Parish estate that's made rum unchanged since 1753. For 2022 the master blender reversed the proportions: 74% three-year-old HGML — a mid-to-high-ester marque running 100 to 1,100 grams per hectoliter, Secret Rum Bar's favorite Hampden mark — and 26% eleven-year-old LFCH, a low-ester marque, tropically aged in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 55% ABV with no sugar, color, or additives. Secret Rum Bar called it a step change that follows Hampden's trend toward younger rums, and found it works. Rum Runner Labs found it aggressively packed with flavor — overripe fruit dominating, with spice, vinegar, and vegetal notes behind — at the upper limit of what's pleasant to sip neat and near the top of the Great House line for intensity. Honest note: this is the funkiest recent Great House, and a limited release mostly sold at the distillery. For a Mai Tai or Daiquiri that deserves it, or neat with water. The year the young rum took over.
