Campfire was born at a Bruichladdich B&B, where David Perkins was served honeydew melon drizzled with peated-whisky syrup and went home to blend bourbon, rye, and peated Scotch in one bottle — the only whiskey of its kind. High West was Utah's first legal distillery since 1870, founded in Park City in 2006 by Perkins, a biochemist, and his wife Jane; Constellation bought it in 2016. Campfire is a three-nation blend: straight bourbon and straight rye from MGP in Indiana, High West's own 80% rye, 20% malted rye from Wanship, and an undisclosed peated single malt from Scotland, married in proportions Perkins calls top secret and bottled at 92 proof; batch 22F29 is from 2022. 88 Bamboo: sweet smoke with honey and butterscotch, a kombu-seaweed peat that never turns harsh. Whisky Analysis: the bourbon's honey is the melody, the rye's floral spice the harmony, and the peat the gravelly voice on top. Expect a nose of campfire smoke over caramel and cherry, a sweet, spicy, faintly briny palate, and a long smoky-sweet finish. Honest note: people either love it or don't understand it, and the ones who love it don't drink anything else in October — for the Islay fan who also drinks bourbon, the s'mores night, and the smokiest Old Fashioned you can make without mezcal.
