Takumi Edition is Kentucky Owl blended with a Japanese master — John Rhea and Yusuke Yahisa of Nagahama Distillery choosing four-, five-, six-, and thirteen-year Kentucky bourbons together and bottling at 100 proof. Kentucky Owl was C.M. Dedman's 1879 Bardstown bourbon, wiped out when Prohibition agents seized 250,000 gallons in 1916 and revived by his great-great-grandson Dixon Dedman in 2014; Stoli bought it in 2017, and John Rhea — the retired Four Roses COO and Bourbon Hall of Famer — blends it. Takumi means artisan, and for this 2022 release Rhea invited Yahisa, the blender at Japan's smallest whisky distillery, to Kentucky to build a blend by the Japanese sense of balance: four ages of Kentucky straight bourbon from undisclosed distilleries, married and bottled at 100 proof. Breaking Bourbon: fresh-baked bread, light caramel, and summer fruit on the nose; rich and full-bodied with caramel, buttery cinnamon cake, and apple-pie crust on the palate; and a finish of cinnamon spice with waves of caramel and raisin — 3.5 out of 5. InsideHook and The Whiskey Wash found the thirteen-year component giving it a depth the price tier expects.
