Kuleana Rum Works was founded in 2013 in Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, growing forty varieties of heirloom sugarcane on a zero-waste, solar-irrigated farm; Nanea is its aged blend, sourced from around the world and married in Hawaii. It's a three-part marriage of column-still molasses rums aged in ex-bourbon barrels: a two-year Guatemalan rum as the base, a three-year Guadeloupe rum for body, and a four-year El Salvador rum as the accent, bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) with a two-year age statement and no sugar, color, or flavoring. The Search for the Ultimate Mai Tai found it a very pleasant sipper, the 43% giving extra flavor to savor, with the column stills lending a light body and spice notes. Rum Ratings' drinkers: among the best of the many new Hawaiian rums, not sweet, very smooth with balance, tasting a little young with a short finish — a nice mixer that would be a good sipper with two more years. Expect a nose of caramel, vanilla, light tropical fruit, and gentle oak, opening into a smooth, medium-light palate of brown sugar, baking spice, and cane with a clean, dry finish.
