Maestro Dobel 50 '1970' Extra Anejo Tequila
Dobel 50 1970 is the first tequila ever finished in Amarone barrels — seven-plus years in French oak, then the Valpolicella dried-grape-wine casks, from twelve-year-old single-estate agave, in a collector's edition that won't be repeated. The Dobel 50 Anniversary Series began in 2022 with 1967, a sherry-finished extra añejo for founder Juan Domingo Beckmann's fiftieth birthday, and continues each year with a vintage marking the events of fifty years prior; Beckmann is the eleventh-generation head of the Cuervo family, and the series is made at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, from agave grown twelve years on a single family estate in the volcanic lowlands of Tequila. 1970 is aged a minimum of seven years in French oak and finished in Amarone casks, bottled at 40% ABV in luxurious presentation; only a few hundred bottles reach the US. Maxim: a robust, harmonious palate owing its distinct character to the French oak aging and the Amarone finish. Robb Report notes each of the trio marks a first for the brand. Amarone gives dried cherry, raisin, and dark chocolate: expect a deep ruby-mahogany pour with a nose of black cherry, raisin, cocoa, and cedar, opening into a dense, silky palate of dried fruit, dark chocolate, French-oak spice, and wine tannin with a very long finish. Honest note: a museum-grade collector's tequila at a museum price — for the Amarone drinker and the collector completing the series. Neat, in a snifter, slowly. Dobel 50, 1970.
