Maker's Mark 101 is the wheated Loretto bourbon at 101 proof — a duty-free exclusive that came stateside when the pandemic emptied the airports — sitting between the 90-proof red wax and Cask Strength. Bill Samuels Sr. founded Maker's Mark in 1953 at Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Kentucky, replacing rye with soft red winter wheat — roughly 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley — after baking bread with each grain bill to find the one that wasn't bitter; his wife Margie designed the bottle and dipped the first one in red wax. The 101 is the same whiskey as the standard bottle — wheated, entered into the barrel at a low 110 proof, aged around six years and rotated by hand through the warehouses — bottled at 101 proof rather than 90. Bourbon Culture: light and fruity with raisin and cherry giving way to cinnamon on the nose; cinnamon and drying oak with cherry, raspberry, and date underneath on the palate; and a finish of cinnamon roll and oak. Whiskey Fellow found more body and more fruit than the 90. Honest note: reviewers call it the Camry of bourbon and mean it kindly — the Maker's you already like with a little more weight, for the Old Fashioned and the drinker who finds 90 proof thin and Cask Strength too much. Neat or on a cube. Maker's, at 101.
