Copper Tongue is two lots of sixteen-year Tennessee bourbon that Nicole Austin found in the Cascade Hollow warehouses — George Dickel's distillery — bottled at cask strength, which after sixteen years in a single-story Tullahoma warehouse turned out to be 89.8 proof. Orphan Barrel is Diageo's 2013 project to find lost and forgotten barrels; most releases came from the old Stitzel-Weller stocks, and Copper Tongue, released in 2021, was the first from Dickel's home. It's Cascade Hollow bourbon — Dickel's 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley mashbill, unmellowed so it qualifies as bourbon — aged sixteen years and bottled uncut at 89.8 proof; Tennessee's cool single-story warehouses lose alcohol faster than water, which is why sixteen years at cask strength lands under 90. Breaking Bourbon: light smoke with cornbread and barrel char, green apple, cinnamon, and leather on the nose; aged oak and baking spice with light fruit on a thin-yet-creamy palate; and a medium finish of baking spice, dry leather, tobacco, wet oak, and char. Drinkhacker and The Whiskey Wash both found more Dickel mineral character. Honest note: reviewers were lukewarm and the Dickel 15 single barrels are the better buy — what this is, is sixteen-year cask-strength Tennessee bourbon in a beautiful bottle, and for the Orphan Barrel collector that's the point.
